Frequently asked questions
Forex (foreign exchange) trading is the buying and selling of one currency against another in the global currency market. Traders speculate on how exchange rates such as EUR/USD or GBP/USD will move, aiming to profit from price changes across the world's largest and most liquid financial market.
Major pairs are the most heavily traded currency pairs, all of which include the US Dollar on one side — EUR/USD, GBP/USD, USD/JPY, AUD/USD, USD/CAD, USD/CHF and NZD/USD. They offer the tightest spreads and the deepest liquidity in the forex market.
Minor pairs, also called crosses, are pairs that do not include the US Dollar, such as EUR/GBP, GBP/JPY and EUR/JPY. Exotic pairs combine a major currency with the currency of a smaller or emerging economy, for example USD/INR, and typically carry wider spreads.
The forex market trades 24 hours a day, five days a week, opening in Sydney on Monday morning and closing in New York on Friday evening. It runs across the Sydney, Tokyo, London and New York sessions, with the highest liquidity when the London and New York sessions overlap.
Leverage lets you control a larger position with a smaller amount of capital, expressed as a ratio such as 30:1 or 100:1. It magnifies both potential profits and potential losses, so effective risk management is essential when trading on margin.
The spread is the difference between the bid (sell) price and the ask (buy) price of a currency pair. It represents the primary cost of a trade — tighter spreads are common on liquid major pairs, while exotic pairs usually have wider spreads.
A pip is the smallest standard price movement in a currency pair, usually the fourth decimal place (0.0001) for most pairs, or the second decimal place for JPY pairs. Pips are the unit traders use to measure gains, losses and spreads.
The FX Economic Calendar lists upcoming releases such as NFP, CPI, GDP and central bank rate decisions along with their forecast and prior values. Filter by currency and impact level to anticipate volatility, then compare the actual release against the forecast to gauge the likely direction of a currency.
An exchange rate is the value of one currency expressed in terms of another — for example, an EUR/USD rate of 1.0892 means one Euro is worth 1.0892 US Dollars. Rates change continuously as supply and demand for each currency shift in the market.
Exchange rates are driven by interest rate decisions, inflation, economic growth, employment data, trade balances, geopolitical events and overall market sentiment. High-impact economic releases and central bank policy are among the strongest short-term drivers.
You can test a strategy on GoCharting using historical data with backtesting and replay tools, and by trading in a risk-free demo environment before committing real capital. This lets you refine entries, exits and risk parameters across different market conditions.
Forex offers deep liquidity, 24-hour access five days a week, low transaction costs on major pairs, the ability to trade both rising and falling markets, and flexible leverage. Its size and continuous nature make it accessible to traders around the world.
